Piezosurgery® is an exciting modality that enables us to cut bone without harming soft tissues. It accomplishes this by using a device that emits ultrasonic vibrations which incise hard tissues, while not disturbing soft tissues, i.e. nerves, sinus membranes, and gum tissues. The periodontal benefits of this are many. Autogenous bone grafting can be done with relative ease. Extraction of teeth in preparation for implant placement can be done with maximum preservation of the socket. All sinus grafting can be done with less risk of sinus perforation and therefore a reduction in post-operative complications. Periodontally accelerated orthodontics is another modality in which small vertical bone incisions are made between the teeth which allows more expedient orthodontic movement. We can now precisely cut bone during augmentation procedures enhancing the final results and expanding deficient areas of bone to accommodate implant placement
