This surgical procedure involves placement of either your own bone or a bone powder (from a tissue bank ) into a periodontal bone defect. This grafted bone acts as a scaffolding for new bone to proliferate. As a result, bone regeneration in a diseased site is possible. This technique is applicable for treatment of periodontal disease as well as in areas where teeth have previously been lost in preparation for dental implants.

Over a period of time, the jaw bone associated with missing teeth atrophies or is reabsorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for placement of dental implants. In these situations, most patients are not candidates for placement of dental implants without some form of bone regeneration.

We now have the ability to grow bone where needed. This gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, and it also gives us a chance to more effectively restore esthetic appearance and functionality.
