Xerostomia (Dry Mouth)
Commonly referred to as dry mouth occurs naturally with age and is normally not a cause for concern. However, there are a multitude of medications which can create acute xerostomia. The implications dental of this are accerlated rates of periodontal disease and tooth decay. Causes of dry mouth include radiation therapy to salivary glands, diabetes, stress and depression, and auto- immune disorders. Dozens of commonly prescribed medications for anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, asthma, and allergies have been implicated in acute decreases in salivary flow.
