Post Operative Instructions After Periodontal or Dental Implant Surgery
Do not eat or drink anything until the anesthetic wears off. Do not eat solid food for two hours. Avoid hot food or hot drinks for eight hours. Eat softer foods for the first week. Avoid sandwiches and other bulky food that you would have to bite into. Try not to disturb the "dressing" on the operated area. Chew on the other side of the mouth.
As soon as possible, if instructed, apply an ice pack to the outside of the face –ten minutes on, ten minutes off– on the first day. This will reduce swelling which may occur in the first few days after surgery.
Ordinarily, little bleeding will occur. If you notice slight oozing around the dressing, do not become upset. This will probably stop after a short time. If bleeding persists or is severe, apply light pressure with a moistened gauze pad in the area from which the blood is coming. Maintain pressure for 15 minutes. Do not rinse or expectorate vigorously. If bleeding continues, call 1-800-436-2780.
For soreness, take pain medication as prescribed.AntibioticsIf you were given antibiotics take them as instructed.
Dressing (Some procedures may not require a dressing)
If a piece of the dressing breaks off before your next appointment, the area that is uncovered may be sensitive. If the discomfort persists, call the office.
Do not brush the surgical area until instructed. Brush and floss the other teeth as usual.
